Dharamsala and Dalai Lama video.

Hello All,

A friend sent me this video of Dharamsala (My old home in North India) and it also has a great interview with His Holiness about his last book. It realy captures the feeling of His Holiness’s home in India.

May 2012 Posting

Hello Friends and family,

Sorry that I’m a little late on April’s blog posting, I’ve been really digging into my studies these days.

Well the big new news is!

Well…after almost 2 year alone here at Gyudmed…I’m no longer the only westerner. With the Arrival of “May Tok” a young lady from France who speaks beautiful Tibetan, and Thomas a scientist from Switzerland staying here for one year as part of a new program His Holiness the Dalai Lama started to bring westerner science classes into Tibetan monasteries. We now have three westerners at Gyudmed. We are all studying language and Buddhism together and both are very nice.

Thomas

Other big news!

I have started my formal classes in Buddhist philosophy and debate about 8 months ahead of schedule. Though I’m defiantly not the brightest student in class I do have a capacity for diligence that seems to please my teachers. In Tibetan culture they have always prized diligence over intelligence, though of course both are essential and prized in Buddhism. These classes are taught in only Tibetan.

Many of you may not know about debate. It’s similar to debate in the west, but much more animated. After studying your daily philosophy lesson all monks go to the debate grounds where the whole monastery takes place in debate. Monks are pared off and heated exchanges on Buddhist philosophy and science ensue, it’s incredible. The energy, the subjects and the competition make it truly electrifying. One monk stands and delivers a hypothesis the other monk sitting, answers and defends his position…a very unique style of study in the world, and the young monks love it! They jump around and get to expel all their young energy all the while studying their lessons.

Other thoughts,

I was sick last week for about 5 days…nothing serious, just the same old Indian stomach bugs. Took some meds and I’m back at study once again.

Our hot season is over…not so hot this year. We are entering monsoon season which is equally mild at Gyudmed. I’m feeling really energetic in my studies and love it!

Next month will be two year for me staying at Gyudmed, and I’m O.K

BUT…what a challenge!

I hope you're all well. I miss you all very much.

Prayers,

Tharpa

Hello All

Hello all,

I had a few minutes and wanted to say hi.

Sorry I don’t blog very much these days. My access to the internet has been a bit limited these days.

So how am I?

I’m doing pretty good these days. We’re currently in the beginning of South India’s hot season here at Gyudmed. Which is really not as bad as you might think. Even though we are just a few hundred miles from the equator, Gyudmed sits at a higher altitude and our  weather is temperate and pleasant with no humidity at all. The afternoon sun without a doubt is “hot” but only if you’re out in it, If you find some shade life’s good. Mornings and evening can actual still be chilly…the best weather of anywhere I’ve lived.

The good news…

I think it is safe to say I can “Officially” speak Tibetan.

I’m not fluent yet but I can speak it form morning to night and be understood.

This has brought a new and wonderful joy to my life, At the time I didn’t realize just how worried I was about returning to school and/or possible failing at my classes and goals.

So know I have a revived hope in my goals and future. And not just my Tibetan, my Hindi and Karnataka languages have improved very much lately. I hope to start my philosophy studies (Only taught in the Tibetan language) next year…boy that’s going to be tough.

Also I’m finding that as my language studies improve, so too does my depth of friendships around the monastery. My healthy is good, I continue to shed a few extra pounds and walk every morning. Most of India is dirty and polluted but here at Gyudmed we live in rural India, in a Tibetan farming settlement were its quiet, not over populated. We live next to India’s second largest forest/jungle and nature preserve, so lots of clean air and just a few tigers, wild elephants, cobras and hand sized scorpions…LOL.

Prayers to all…and yes…I still love you all very much.

Tharpa

Beyond Religion

Hello All,

I wanted to recommend The Dalai Lama’s new book to everyone.

A great deal of His Holiness’s books are transcribed from teachings, only for a few did he deem important enough to take the time to sit down and write them himself. He has dozens of books to his name but has only sat down to write 6, and this is the latest one.

This book is for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their life and the lives of those they love but don't have the ability or time to make a big commitment.

This is a book for everyone, Religious, atheist, agnostic or secular minded.

I believe it will become a very important book.

Prayers to all,

Tharpa

Back at Gyudmed

Happy Losar  everyone! (Tibetan New-year / year of the Water-Dragon)

Well, I’m safe and sound back at Gyudmed after another long visa trip. It's nice to be back to warm weather and peace and quiet.

I've been a little under the weather since I arrived back in Gyudmed...I always seem to get sick on my returns from Dharamsala, I slept for a few days and now feeling better nothing dangerous. I’m still a little tired so I’ll have to keep this blog short.

Well I hope everyone is well. I’m on holiday for a month or so, and then back to my classes.

Prayers,

Tharpa

Leaving for my bi- annual visa run

Hello All,

Well, it's that time of year again and I’m getting ready to head up to Dharamsala in North India for my bi-annual visa run.  I like Dharamsala but South India is so much nicer…I don’t enjoy these visa runs but I do have many friends in the north to visit.

I’ll be leaving: Feb. 9th

and returning on: March 23rd.

Its 3 days of travel up, and a grueling 1,500 mile trip by train.

I really enjoy the Indian trains; the Indians are crazy and amazing to watch. The train is a sleeper so you have a bed and seat it’s actually pretty comfortable and the food is quit tasty.

I’ll be staying with my good friend Dorji for the week and hopefully watch lots of American movies…don’t tell the monastery.

Emails will be slow to answer during this time.

I hope you’re all great and enjoying your lives…not just planing for future enjoyments.

Love and prayers,

Tharpa

"Safe and sound" back at Gyudmed

Hello All,
Just wanted everyone to know I arrived safe and sound back home at Gyudmed Monastery. It was an exhausting trip, it was hard to keep the mind positive and spiritual throughout the event, there was just so many people.

I heard officially there was 300,000 people at the teachings...
It's so nice to be home...to take a hot shower...to eat some good fresh food and to sleep in my own bed. Everyone coming home is sick from the dust...don't worry it was the same last year. I have a cold/allergy/whatever going to the doctors today for some cough medicine and hydration powder, should be well again in a few days.

I felt I had many complaints about my life before I left...but on returning my life here appears "heaven like". Funny how a long, challenging trip puts our lives into perspective.

Well my classes start again in a few days and I have lots of clothes to wash....miss you all very much,

Love and prayers,
Tharpa

Teachings Finished Today

Hello All,
Well today was the last day of teachings and it was great!
The event was definitely challenging. I don't know how many people actually attended, but the little city of Bodhgaya was overwhelmed. With a few days of rain and lots of mud, It felt like a Woodstock for Buddhist. I think half of the population was beggars, anyone with a disability within a hundred miles was there to cash in on all the Buddhist generosity. Most everyone developed a bad cough and/or colds from all the dust. I stayed with the 500 Gyudmed monks in a giant hall with wall to wall monks, mattress upon mattress...the snoring was astounding!  But the monks made amazing food and we survived with just a dozen toilets. Early tomorrow morning I leave, and back on a two day train trip back to Gyudmed. It was an amazing experience but I'm defiantly glad that it will soon be behind me, it will be "much better remembered in the retelling" as one of my dear friends put it.

Highlights of the event:
His Holiness the Dalai Lama was great, so funny and filled with vitality.
The thousands of Tibetans that braved the dangerous trip from Tibet to receive the empowerment...they all stayed in a city of tents.
Richard Gere gave a wonderful speach and one of my westerner monk friends got to read a prayer with him in front of the crowd.
They served bread and tea twice a day for the estimated 300,000 people...WOW! it was amazing to watch. When I say served I do mean served. Hundreds of monks with big tea pots ran up and down every row pouring tea and handing bread to everyone. Butter tea in the mornings and sweet milk tea in the afternoons...you never saw anything like it, the tradition is for the young monk servers to run at incredible speed and they have great fun seeing how fast they can go, often crashing into each other with butter tea flying everywhere.

I posted lots of pics on my last trip here and I on't own a camera so sorry no photos this time.

Love and prayers,
Tharpa

Arrived at Bodhgaya

Hello All,
Just wanted to say hi and that I arrived safely in Bodhgaya.
The place is a mad house many of you may not know that Bodhgaya is a very small city and for this week it is home to 300,000 monks, nuns and devoted Buddhist from around the world.

I have name this occasion the "Ocean of devotion" Ocean coming from the Dalai Lama's title "Ocean of Wisdom" but one may also call it the "Holy Hurricane" for it feels more like a storm than a calm spiritual event. Bodhgaya just doesn't have the resources to make this a comfortable event, many westerners are living in shacks with dirt floors, our monastery has rented a large hall for us and it is "wall to wall" monks. Cold showers and few toilets makes the event truly special...LOL.

Arrived a few days ago, teachings begin this afternoon...email more when I can get to another computer...There are 300,000 people in line behind me, waiting to use this one.

Prayers,
Tharpa
